Another title sequence I worked on at Elastic. Made for the new Showtime show, the sequence is series of
innuendos mixed with close-up shots of medical "procedures." My job was
setting up and shooting a handful of the innuendo shots, which I did
using the Canon 5D Mark III, and animating the (admittedly creepy) Dick
and Jane shots scattered throughout it, which I did using Adobe
Photoshop and AfterEffects. I was also put up to the task of scouring stock footage sites for clips that, when looked at with the right mindset, make you giggle.
Even
though it only loosely touches on the actual plot of the show, I think
it perfectly sets the tone for what's coming, which is something all
title sequences should do. Also it's just plain funny.
UPDATE: Our "Masters of Sex" title sequence is featured on Art of the Title!
UPDATE II: 7/10/14
This is incredible and completely unbelievable.
Masters of Sex is an Emmy Awards nominee for Outstanding Main Title Design!
I'm floored.

Why is everyone White? It cannot be because of the time period, since most of the footage isn't archival. Sex is universal, which seems to be the underlying theme, and yet the opening titles are so racially exclusive, while still including inanimate objects, animals and plants. Come on. I'm not saying it was your call, but someone in the office had the conversation, I hope? (I'm not being a troll, I actually want to know.)
ReplyDeleteIs there a reason place you can purchase the Dick and Jane still shots?
