Starz: "Flesh and Bone" Main Titles

Some main titles I worked on at Elastic for the Starz show "Flesh and Bone."  The sequence was directed by Angus Wall, who has also done the titles for countless other shows (Game of Thrones, Carnivale, etc.).  Google "best title sequences" and he will probably have directed half of them, and it was a real treat to work with him on this.  It required a ton of research, but luckily ballerinas are many photographers' favorite subjects, so there's a lot of photo reference out there to draw from.  Much of the look was inspired by the photography and illustration of Matt Mahurin, since Angus wanted it to have a surreal quality.

In addition to researching imagery, they had me create some skeletal overlay effects, which forced me to brush up on human anatomy. These flash quickly across the screen and give a sense of the physical stress the dancer is putting herself through. These flashes add a contrast to the grace of the ballet; the sequence shifts back and forth between elegance and harshness, and portrays the trauma that dancers are willing to suffer in order to achieve the beauty of their artform.  As an introduction for the audience to a show about a dancer struggling to make it, I think this sequence nails the tone perfectly.
